Nineteen Names, One Company, One Morning in 1944
Nineteen of the roughly 30 to 38 Bedford men serving in Company A of the 116th Infantry Regiment were killed within the first several minutes of the June 6, 1944 Omaha Beach landing, and a twentieth Bedford native serving in Company F died that same day — the highest known per-capita D-Day loss of any American community. The National D-Day Memorial, after groundbreaking in 1997, was dedicated here by President George W. Bush on June 6, 2001. None of that history has anything to do with when a given Bedford house was actually built or plumbed.
