A Tobacco Warehouse and an 1802 Charter
John Brooke set up a tobacco warehouse at a Staunton River ferry crossing around 1800, and the Virginia General Assembly officially established the Town of Brookneal by act in 1802 — naming it for John and his wife, Sarah, née Neal, Brooke. A house from Brookneal's earliest decades as a river-trade town was often plumbed generations after it was first built, whenever the family that owned it could afford to add it.
