Jefferson's Retreat Isn't Your Bathroom's Timeline
Forest is home to Poplar Forest, the octagonal retreat house Thomas Jefferson began building in 1806 on land he'd inherited through his wife Martha back in 1773. He'd already spent two months there in 1781, eluding British troops near Monticello and drafting much of “Notes on the State of Virginia” during that stay. None of that 1806 construction tells us anything about the plumbing in a 20th-century Route 221 corridor home, which is where most Forest bathroom projects actually are.
